The challenge for the HCC – Fashion School, was to transform the existing Planned Parenthood building into a celebration of fabric design for the College’s Central Campus and to house teaching facilities for at least 600 students. There was an estimated funding cost for the design at $4.5 million. Texture and relief were used to enhance the students’ and visitors’ experience of the building. Materials such as brick pavers, ground cover, wooden deck as well as upper and middle story foliage were used for site redevelopment. For the building elevation, a scrim and screen were layered over the base to create a shimmer and constant visual change. The building entry lobby provided an opportunity to place large screens to show images and videos of fashion pieces and runway shows. By design, the fashion and computer labs were located on the first floor with faculty and staff offices. The second floor houses the main Lecture Rooms, Administrative offices, storage area for the vast Fashion Collection, a series of Display windows to the street and the large Fashion Gallery space which can be transformed into a stage and sitting area for runway shows.
